The 8 characteristics of Gothic Horror
here the 8 characteristics of Gothic Horror which a good Gothic Horror film or book need to make it different from other Horror types.
The Characteristics of Gothic Horror found in the island of Dr Moreau
The hero would find himself in a dark mysterious world full of supernatural elements.
The hero in this movie is Braddock and there is no doubt and i can give one reason why it is and that is Braddock is one of the only characters in the movie besides Maria who actually survives the series of events that occur on The Island and the movie is mostly based around him trying to get off the island. Now all that is left to explain is how the island of Dr Moreau is a dark and mysterious place full of supernatural things and that shouldnt be too hard to explain. The island is basically the definition of a place which is dark mysterious and supernatural and one reason which backs me up is that there are things happening on the island that although might have a reason for it is VERY different to what we see every day, unless you see half man half animal creatures walking around the place, and the definition of supernatural in simpler terms is something scientist cant understand and i am pretty sure Dr Moreau doesn't even understand his creations all too well.
The Collapse of Once great Societies
Now this one should be easy to explains. The human inhabitants of the island have set up a Soceity which might not have been big or powerful but achieved much and even created another society which turned out to be the man-beasts. Now these soceities you could argue arent the greatest in human history but they were still a society and one of the Gothic Horror characteristics is the Collapse of once great Societies, and i am pretty sure the destruction of Dr Moreau compound and the death of all the man-beasts fit under this characteristics.
The Hero remains unafraid and strong
Now this one is going to be a hard one but to explain but i think i could do it. Well we all know that the Hero is Braddock we have been through that in the above, Now to find a perfect action that will show you that Braddock remains unafraid and strong. One reason that Braddock backs me up is that Braddock stays as calm as you could get through the movie even though he was near death multiple times. Anyone reason that also helps me explain this is that he never goes insane or panic's even with animal DNA in him.
Destruction or Decay of Judgement while facing the unknown
Now this one is referring to most of the characters. Now throughout the movie Dr Moreau makes some very bad decisions becuase he has gone insane which eventually leads to his death and the death of the man-beasts. Some decision are that is choose to take Braddock o the punishment room which is only for Man-beasts and i am pretty sure Braddock isn't a wild beast. His Judgement failed to choose the right chooses like also killing his loyal assistant Dr Montgomery But it wasn't just Dr Moreau, Braddock also made some decisions like killing the man-beasts even though it was one of the rules not too.
